Absolute velocity measurements in sunspot umbrae
In sunspot umbrae, convection is largely suppressed by the strong magnetic
field. Previous measurements reported on negligible convective flows in umbral
cores. Based on this, numerous studies have taken the umbra as zero reference
to calculate Doppler velocities of the ambient active region. To clarify the
amount of convective motion in the darkest part of umbrae, we directly measured
Doppler velocities with an unprecedented accuracy and precision. We performed
spectroscopic observations of sunspot umbrae with the Laser Absolute Reference
Spectrograph (LARS) at the German Vacuum Tower Telescope. A laser frequency
comb enabled the calibration of the high-resolution spectrograph and absolute
wavelength positions. A thorough spectral calibration, including the
measurement of the reference wavelength, yielded Doppler shifts of the spectral
line Ti i 5713.9 {\AA} with an uncertainty of around 5 m s-1. The measured
Doppler shifts are a composition of umbral convection and magneto-acoustic
waves. For the analysis of convective shifts, we temporally average each
sequence to reduce the superimposed wave signal. Compared to convective
blueshifts of up to -350 m s-1 in the quiet Sun, sunspot umbrae yield a
strongly reduced convective blueshifts around -30 m s-1. {W}e find that the
velocity in a sunspot umbra correlates significantly with the magnetic field
strength, but also with the umbral temperature defining the depth of the
titanium line. The vertical upward motion decreases with increasing field
strength. Extrapolating the linear approximation to zero magnetic field
reproduces the measured quiet Sun blueshift. Simply taking the sunspot umbra as
a zero velocity reference for the calculation of photospheric Dopplergrams can
imply a systematic velocity error.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, Appendix with 5 figure
Ca II 8542 \AA\ brightenings induced by a solar microflare
We study small-scale brightenings in Ca II 8542 \AA\ line-core images to
determine their nature and effect on localized heating and mass transfer in
active regions. High-resolution 2D spectroscopic observations of an active
region in the Ca II 8542 \AA\ line were acquired with the GFPI attached to the
1.5-meter GREGOR telescope. Inversions of the spectra were carried out using
NICOLE. We identified three brightenings of sizes up to 2"x2". We found
evidence that the brightenings belonged to the footpoints of a microflare (MF).
The properties of the observed brightenings disqualified the scenarios of
Ellerman bombs or IRIS bombs. However, this MF shared some common properties
with flaring active-region fibrils or flaring arch filaments (FAFs): (1) FAFs
and MFs are both apparent in chromospheric and coronal layers according to the
AIA channels, and (2) both show flaring arches with lifetimes of about 3.0-3.5
min and lengths of about 20". The inversions revealed heating by 600 K at the
footpoint location in the ambient chromosphere during the impulsive phase.
Connecting the footpoints, a dark filamentary structure appeared in the Ca II
line-core images. Before the start of the MF, the spectra of this structure
already indicated average blueshifts, meaning upward motions of the plasma
along the LOS. During the impulsive phase, these velocities increased up to
-2.2 km/s. Downflows dominated at the footpoints. However, in the upper
photosphere, slight upflows occurred during the impulsive phase. Hence,
bidirectional flows are present in the footpoints of the MF. Conclusions: We
detected Ca II brightenings that coincided with the footpoint location of an
MF. The MF event led to a rise of plasma in the upper photosphere, both before
and during the impulsive phase. Excess mass, previously raised to at most
chromospheric layers, slowly drained downward along arches toward the
footpoints of the MF.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 13 pages, 6

Gli ancetres del Roman de Tristan in prosa. Studio e saggio di edizione (ms. Paris, BnF, fr. 756, cc.1-21)
Observation of psi (3686) -> n(n)over-bar and improved measurement of psi (3686) -> p(p)over-bar
We observe the decay psi (3686) -> n (n) over bar for the first time and measure psi (3686) -> p (p) over bar with improved accuracy by using 1.07 x 10(8) psi (3686) events collected with the BESIII detector. The measured branching fractions are B(psi(3686) -> n (n) over bar) = (3.06 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.14) x 10(-4) and B(psi(3686) -> p (p) over bar) = (3.05 +/- 0.02 +/- 0.12) x 10(-4). Here, the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second ones are systematic. With the hypothesis that the polar angular distributions of the neutron and proton in the center-of-mass system obey 1 + alpha cos(2) theta, we determine the a parameters to be alpha(n (n) over bar) = 0.68 +/- 0.12 +/- 0.11 and alpha(p (p) over bar) = 1.03 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.03 for psi(3686) -> n (n) over bar and psi(3686) -> p (p) over bar, respectively
Emission patterns of neutral pions in 40 A MeV Ta+Au reactions
Differential cross sections of neutral pions emitted in 181Ta + 197Au
collisions at a beam energy of 39.5A MeV have been measured with the photon
spectrometer TAPS. The kinetic energy and transverse momentum spectra of
neutral pions cannot be properly described in the framework of the thermal
model, nor when the reabsorption of pions is accounted for in a
phenomenological model. However, high energy and high momentum tails of the
pion spectra can be well fitted through thermal distributions with unexpectedly
soft temperature parameters below 10 MeV.Comment: 16 pages (double-spaced), 5 figures; corrections after referee's

Thermal Bremsstrahlung photons probing the nuclear caloric curve
Hard-photon (E 30 MeV) emission from second-chance
nucleon-nucleon Bremsstrahlung collisions in intermediate energy heavy-ion
reactions is studied employing a realistic thermal model. Photon spectra and
yields measured in several nucleus-nucleus reactions are consistent with an
emission from hot nuclear systems with temperatures 4 - 7 MeV. The
corresponding caloric curve in the region of excitation energies
3{\it A} - 8{\it A} MeV shows lower values of than
those expected for a Fermi fluid.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures. To appear in Physics Letters
